Plex – Taking the Media World by Storm

Have you heard of Plex, the latest and greatest media technology company? It will soon be impossible to avoid, as it is taking the media world by storm.

Like most people, you probably have your media scattered all over: on your phone, your computer, the Cloud, your tablets, your kids’ media devices, gaming consoles. Plex makes it simple to gather and organize your media— music, photos, movies, TV shows, and more— so that you and everyone in your family can easily access and stream anything you have digitally stored somewhere. You can even easily share your media with friends and distant family. As Plex says, it is like having Mission Control for your media collection.

Plex works with an incredibly wide variety of devices, including Smart TVs, Roku, iPhones, Apple TVs, tablets, iPads, gaming consoles, and more. It is truly like having your own personal server, and you can even access it when you are traveling! Plex has an app for virtually every device, including many Smart TVs, such as LG, Samsung, Sony, TiVo, Toshiba, VISIO, Sonos, and Roku.

Once you are up and running, all your media will be organized into libraries, making everything easily searchable.

To use Plex, you must download the server, either to a device or to the Cloud.

There is a free version that is a good way to see how Plex works. The premium version, Plex Pass, offers expanded features, such as Plex Mix for music (like your own personal radio station), the ability to use the unique Plex DVR, offline Cloud syncing, allowing multiple users, and more. Find out more about Plex at Plex.tv.

If you have a lot of media, especially movies and photos, you may want to consider purchasing a dedicated media storage and backup device such as the QNAP. This diskless system is great for data backup, file synchronization and sharing, remote access, and multimedia applications.

Of course, if you decide to try Plex and want to make everything super easy, we at Dr. Networking can come out to your home or home office and set everything up for you. We can download the Plex server, sync across all your devices, set up the server in the Cloud (should you choose), and even install a QNAP or other backup and storage device. For those hardy souls who decide to install everything themselves, keep us in mind when should you get stuck, and we will come to save the day! Call us during office hours at 541.488.8765.
